Individual Therapy: How do I change what I’m experiencing?

What is Individual Therapy?

Psychotherapy helps you change the parts of your experience that aren’t working well for you anymore.

For individuals, this could include explorations such as:

I would like to work through a trauma that happened to me when I was young;

I want to know more about myself;

Why do I feel worthless, and how can I love myself better?

Part of these explorations will include understanding and holding compassion for how the patterns that don’t serve you well anymore were very helpful to you when you were younger. We create our defences for a reason!

In individual therapy, we will create a customized treatment plan to work through your concerns and rewrite old stories so you can live a more enriching, vibrant life.

Who Can Benefit From Individual Therapy?

In my experience, people who are considering individual therapy have something ‘right’ with them rather than something ‘wrong’ with them. As a Clinical Psychologist, I feel very lucky to be working with the kind and inspiring people who are my clients, and helping them discover and become more of who they are.

In my opinion, everyone can benefit from personal development work and most people can benefit from individual therapy. Individual therapy tends to resonate most strongly with people who are curious about themselves and others, and have the time and capacity to explore their concerns.

What Are the Benefits of Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy can help you become more of who you are: it can help you clarify your challenges, gifts and dreams; and assist you to ponder how you want to move through the world and interact with people. It can give you the ability to change how you communicate with yourself and others to build more satisfying and authentic relationships, and can also help you understand or frame events in your life differently. Clients typically leave individual therapy with an increased and compassionate understanding of themselves, and hope for their future.

My Individual Therapy Approach

If we work together, I will develop a customized treatment plan for you based on your needs and preferences. I draw mostly from Emotion Focused Therapy, which involves working together to access your painful feelings so that we can explore and resolve them. (A common EFT saying is “you have to go to a place in order to leave it.”) I also draw heavily on Narrative Therapy, which privileges the client’s knowledge and expertise, and supports clients to rewrite the stories that larger entities and systems may have authored.

I have had the honour of working with clients pondering a variety of existential struggles, and have worked most often with individuals who are questioning in the areas of anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and intimate relationships.
